The Best Kept Secret

Monday, September 28, 2009 by Chris Broshears

Can you hear me?Last week marked the one-year anniversary of my joining Delivra, when Neil Berman hired me to lead the Product Development team.  Prior to that, I knew very little of the company, except what I had heard from a couple of  former associates who preceded me in coming here.  I was quickly impressed with what I saw in Delivra's software offering, and with the management team's willingness to try new things--with a minimum of deliberation and delay--if it means providing better service to our customers.  But even in the close-knit technology community of Indianapolis, few of my peers have previously been familiar with the great things happening here at Delivra.

One way I've been able to explain Delivra to outsiders is by comparison to our better-known, local competitor ExactTarget.  In fact, because both companies are based in Indianapolis, many people I talk to assume the Delivra must be some sort of ExactTarget spin-off, or a recent startup company.  They're surprised to learn that Delivra was actually founded earlier (1999) than ExactTarget (2000)!  So why haven't they heard of us?

For one thing, Delivra used to be known by a different name.  But the main reason is that our growth philosophy has been different from that of our larger neighbor.  Neil has been able to grow his business steadily, quietly, without spending much on traditional marketing.  Delivra's business continues to grow by double-digit percentages from year to year, based largely on referrals from satisfied customers, and on our ability to help existing clients expand theirs.  Furthermore, we're also not doing the kinds of things that make a splash with traditional business media.  You won't read about Delivra in the IBJ as having planned an IPO, or raised millions in venture capital; we like the idea that our only accountability is to our customers, and not to a board of directors or hungry investors.  "Indianapolis tech company successfully pursues strategy of debt-free, controlled growth" is a positive story, though not a particularly sexy headline.

So that's why I'm excited about this blog, and all the other efforts by our new Marketing manager to let others in on the best-kept secret among Indiana technology firms, and the best-kept secret among email service providers!  Product Development at Delivra has big plans for the year ahead--stay tuned to emailchatr for more on our accomplishments.
